So in the end, we felt it wasn't worth it. We then went to Ninh Binh which we preferred, cruising on a motorbike along rice paddies, even helping locals carry rice bags ; boat tour on the river not crowded on weekdays, everything was really peaceful. We stayed in Tam Coc which was fairly quiet. If possible, come during rice growing season, otherwise you will see a lot of brown fields. We came during rice harvest end of May and saw lots of gold fields! Since you mentioned Hoi An, the old town is the complete opposite of peaceful, very crowded except if you go early morning.
